Gammadda Empowers Welgaala Community with Clean Water Initiative

In a significant stride towards addressing the water crisis faced by the Ibbagamuwa Nelliya Welgaala Vidyalaya and the residents of Welgaala village, Gammadda has successfully installed and inaugurated a cutting-edge water treatment system. The official handover ceremony took place today, marking a pivotal moment for the community's access to clean drinking water.

Ibbagamuwa Nelliya Welgaala Vidyalaya, home to approximately 360 students, has long grappled with the challenge of sourcing water from a public well situated around two hundred meters from the school. Regrettably, the water from this source is unsuitable for consumption, posing health risks to the students. Despite the presence of water for daily needs in Welgala Vidyalaya and the surrounding village, securing clean drinking water remained a persistent struggle. Residents either had to rely on the village water distribution system or make a trecherous three-kilometer trek to find potable water risking elephant attacks, exacerbating the plight of the community. The dire situation also contributed to reported cases of kidney ailments among residents.

Responding to the pleas of the residents and recognizing the urgency of the issue, Gammadda undertook the responsibility to alleviate the water crisis in the region. The water treatment system, designed to meet the specific needs of Ibbagamuwa Nelliya Welgaala College and the Welgaala village, has been meticulously completed and officially handed over today, on the 5th of December, 2023.

Crucial financial support for this transformative project was generously provided by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka). Additionally, the technical expertise of the Sri Lanka Navy played an instrumental role in the successful implementation of the water filtration system.
