Gammadda Initiative Breaks Ground for Clean Water Solutions in Ratmalwetiya Village

Ratmalwetiya, nestled within the Galenbidunuwewa division in the heart of the Anuradhapura District, stands as a self-sufficient village thriving on agricultural activities including paddy and corn. Home to over 500 families, the community faces a pressing challenge—clean drinking water scarcity that has affected not only the village residents but also the Ratmalawetiya Primary School, where over 220 children aged 1 to 5 years are pursuing their education.

In their daily lives, the children and residents of Ratmalwetiya must travel to Galenbidunuwewa town to access water from a communal filter. This inconvenient situation has already led to the identification of 12 reported cases of kidney-related ailments in the village.

Acknowledging the critical water issue gripping Ratmalwetiya, the Gammadda team has taken a proactive stance to address this challenge. On this significant day, the foundation stone for a water filtration system dedicated to Ratmalwetiya was ceremoniously laid in a groundbreaking ceremony (16/12/2023). This was followed by a ceremonial tree planting to mark the occasion.

The financial backing for this essential project comes from the generous contributions of Mr. Helani Jayasena from Rajagiriya, Ms. Ruki Wijerathna from Colombo 02, and Mr. Ramzeen Razak from Navala, Koswatta. Their support exemplifies a commitment to ensuring a brighter future for the residents of Ratmalwetiya, particularly the young learners at the Ratmalawetiya Primary School.

The upcoming water filtration system, implemented with the technical expertise of the Sri Lanka Navy, is poised to provide a sustainable solution to the long-standing drinking water challenges faced by the village residents and schoolchildren. As the project unfolds, it promises to herald positive change and improved living conditions for the vibrant community of Ratmalwetiya.
